As of February21, 2012, and my truck is muddy.
Fool Hollow is open and yielding some trout and an occasional walleye.
Show Low is open and caught a few the other day on peacock bodied nymphs in the southwest arm. Fish were suspended at 8 to 20 feet.
Woodland is open but was drawn down a lot this winter to a mere puddle. Probably not much until it is stocked in early April.
Rainbow is open and metered fish but no biters. Water was still 39 degrees 10 days ago. Pike netting will start the second week of March.
Have not been to Scott. It is open.
Silver Creek still has fish but hey have sore mouths. Crouch, creep, and crawl as they spook easily.
Becker is open. Reports are the water is cold but there are some biting. No real info on what.
Little Bear is frozen but starting to spill. Assume Big Bear is the same.
Hawley Road is blocked. Plans to drain it seem firm.
Horseshoe is frozen and still is 3 or 4 feet below spill.
A-1 and Sunrise are for ice fishing.

NATURE CENTER TO HOST FREE LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

AND FIREWISE WORKSHOP

The White Mountain Wildlife & Nature Center will be holding its 3rd annual Sustainable Landscaping for Wildlife and FIREWISE Workshop this Saturday, June 25th, starting at 10:00 AM. With the Wallow Fire devastating Apache and Greenlee counties, along and other wildfires across Arizona, this workshop is especially timely and pertinent. Much information will be provided to not only create sustainable landscaping, but to protect area homes from the ravages of wildfire and to promote forest health. Several experts and officials will be on hand to provide technical guidance and direct homeowners to grants to help defray the cost of thinning and achieving FIREWISE compliance.

Wildlife biologist Sue Sitko with The Nature Conservancy will discuss principals for creating backyard habitats for wildlife, including plant selection to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other wildlife except bears. Landscaping plant selection and planting techniques for our area, including how to deal with our clay soils will be presented by Donovan and Donzetta Cotton with Proscape Landscaping. Continuous Raingutter Systems will be on hand with their rainwater harvesting and delivery display and demonstrations.

Officials with both the Lakeside and Pinetop fire departments will be on hand to discuss FIREWISE home and property protection principals, and will provide excellent information on how homeowners can take control of minimizing the risk of losing their homes to wildfire. Paul Esparza with the Town of Pinetop-Lakeside will detail compliance with its revised Forest Health and Fire Risk Reduction ordinance and offer grant opportunities to homeowners to treat their properties.

This workshop is free to the public. The workshop will be held at the Nature Center at 425 S. Woodland Road in Pinetop-Lakeside; see www.wmnature.org for more information or call (928) 358-3069.

Tips from John Rohmer @ April 20th, 2011

White Mtn. Flyfishing Club Monthly Meeting

Semi seal leeches are best; color, not size, is what counts.

When spawning, fish react to a bead that looks like an egg. Early or late in the season.

Use lighter colors in the Spring; darker colors in the Fall.

On Sunrise Lake use reddish brown colors at the end of the season.

Rubber legs catch browns at Hawley & Reservation Lakes, or small mouths.

You can always just pull off the legs if the fly is not working.

John said to throw big flies at ice out.

And to always use quality hooks!

The lighter the fly the more versatility you have with your casting.

He also suggested using small split shots instead of weighted flies.

His website is http://www.azflyfishing.net
